The maintenance of bathroom drains is crucial for ensuring a comfortable home life. If the drain emits unpleasant odors, it's essential to address the issue promptly to maintain a pleasant living environment. So, how can we handle odors from bathroom drains, and what causes these odors? Let's take a look together.

What to do if the bathroom drain emits odors

1. Prepare a basin and mix an appropriate amount of baking soda and vinegar, then pour the mixture into the drain. This can effectively remove grease and other residues.

2. Pour some caustic soda into the drainage pipe, followed by boiling water to help dissolve blockages, then flush with water.

3. Take a plastic bag half-filled with water, seal it tightly, and place it over the drain.

What causes odors from bathroom drains

1. If the drains used in the bathroom are substandard, they may emit odors shortly after installation. Drains available on the market come in traditional odor-proof types and new self-sealing types, each with varying standards. For water-seal type odor traps, the height should be controlled at around 50mm. However, some manufacturers produce water-seal drains with a height of only about 10mm, which results in weak odor-proofing performance.

2. For traditional drains, you also need to be aware of inherent issues, such as if the water seal height exceeds 50mm, odors may still escape. Additionally, longer and more convoluted water pathways can increase the area where bacteria can breed.

3. If you have installed self-sealing drains at home and fail to maintain them properly, they can also produce odors. It's worth noting that current technology cannot create a perfect seal for self-sealing drains, so after a period of use, it's inevitable that odors will occur.

In summary:we have covered how to handle odors from bathroom drains and what causes them. If your bathroom drain begins to emit unpleasant odors, it's crucial to identify the reason and address it promptly to effectively resolve the issue.
